Hywyn

Hywyn

On the tip of the Llyn peninsula, Aberdaron was an important place for pilgrims to depart to cross over to Bardsey Island. This was a clas church from the 5th to 6th century (a combination of a monastery and college) and due to its remote location, it was able to remain a clas church until the reformation. The current church sits only yards away from the sea at Aberdaron and dates back to to the 11th century

St Hywyn travelled to Wales from Brittany in the 6th century with St Cadfan and established a worshiping community in Aberdaron. St Cadfan went on to establish the Celtic monastery on Bardsey. St Hywyn was said to be confessor to St Cadfan’s and chaplain to the monks on Bardsey.
